LUSAKA- Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has called on the public to report any illegal manufacturing of bottled water, mealie meal, beverages and other products covered by compulsory standards to protect consumers from unsafe products.
ZCSA Head of Communications Brian Hatyoka said the public should become alert and to report suspicious products to the nearest ZCSA office so that appropriate enforcement actions are taken.
Mr. Hatyoka assured that the Agency has a whistle-blower policy and upholds confidentiality in line with its core values in a quest to protect whistle-blowers.
He added that as ZCSA celebrates this year’s World Consumer Rights Day on Friday, March 15, 2024, consumers are urged to be safety conscious and only buy products from reputable sources.
Mr. Hatyoka noted that illegal manufacturing, importation and supply of substandard products may pose a risk to public safety, health and the environment.
“Currently, ZCSA is collaborating with other law enforcement agencies to investigate a case in which some people were illegally repackaging different mealie meal brands in Lusaka’s Kamwala South area in violation of the Zambian Compulsory Standard – ZS 189-Maize Meal Specification,” he said.
Mr. Hatyoka said that the Agency has since taken some samples of the seized mealie meal brands to the laboratory for further analysis.
